Great usability can 10x your revenue

Updated: Jun 19, 2023

A simple Google search would reveal that usability is the measure of your website’s or app’s quality. Digital products can range from a piece of software / mobile application to a video game and all the way up to a missile launching system, or even as humble as a menu at the restaurant. In simple terms, the usability of your product depends on your ability to build things in a way that enables your user to utilize the product in the easiest and most efficient way possible. But how do you measure it? The simple answer is, you can’t quantify it from a UX audit. However, there are ways to make a qualitative assessment of usability.

You can make a qualitative assessment of the usability of your products either before release or during a UX audit based on the following components: - Learnability: Can a target user learn to carry out simple tasks on their first attempt? If the answer is yes, it passes the test of learnability.

- Efficiency: Users should be able to complete tasks quickly once they’ve grasped the basic design of the product.

- Memorability: If your users were unable to use your product for a long period of time, they should be able to remember how to use it.

- Errors: The target users must be able to use your product without a lot of errors. And in the rare occasions they do come across / make an unintended error, they should be able to recover from the error with ease.

- Satisfaction: A user should be able to say that they had a pleasant experience using your product.

These components were defined by a co-founder of leading UX design firm Nielsen Norman Group, notorious for their UX audits.

Okay, why is all this important?

When you’re about to publish your product, there ought to be a bunch of tests conducted either before the release or during the UX audit to ensure success of the product. With the aforementioned components, it is highly likely that your product would succeed. In the context of softwares, you need to conduct a usability test among other tests which include functionality, compatibility, performance and accessibility. But out of all, usability is a never-ending process, as rightly said by UX audit experts.

You might have conducted a usability test before releasing your product, and that’s actually good enough, but only during pre-release. You may not get the same results if you perform a holistic UX audit for your product - because a lot of things change during the course of any time period post-release. Users & their persona, your business, your website. That’s why you need to conduct a UX audit in regular intervals to make sure your business is always ahead of the competition.
